The Federal Government has dispelled rumors that Abuja’s Murtala Muhammed Expressway has been renamed as Wole Soyinka Way.
This clarification was issued in a statement by Rabiu Ibrahim, Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, on June 17, 2024.
According to the statement, the administration has never considered renaming the Murtala Muhammed Expressway.
On June 4, 2024, President Bola Tinubu inaugurated a new road in the Federal Capital Territory, designated as Arterial Road N20, which connects Katampe to Jahi and links the Outer Northern Expressway (Murtala Muhammed Expressway) to the Northern Parkway (Ahmadu Bello Way).
During the inauguration, FCT Minister Barrister Nyesom Wike proposed that the new Arterial Road N20 be named after Prof. Wole Soyinka, a suggestion that President Tinubu accepted.
Consequently, it is the newly inaugurated Arterial Road N20 that has been named after Prof. Soyinka, not the Murtala Muhammed Expressway.
The Murtala Muhammed Expressway retains its original name, honoring the esteemed former Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Muhammed.
The government urges citizens to disregard the false reports about the renaming, which it described as entirely fictitious and unfounded.
