The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has joined the global literary community in commemorating the World Poetry Day, celebrated annually on March 21.
The day, established by UNESCO, recognises poetry as one of humanity’s most powerful artistic expressions and promotes the reading, writing, publishing, and teaching of poetry around the world.
ANA Media Team said in a statement today that in marking the occasion, the association has highlighted the significant role poetry continues to play in Nigeria’s literary and cultural landscape.
ANA noted that for generations, Nigerian poets have used poetry to capture the nation’s history, reflect social realities, celebrate cultural identity, and challenge injustice. “Poetry remains a vibrant medium through which writers interpret the experiences and aspirations of society,” it said.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to promoting poetry and supporting poets across Nigeria.
It said: “Through its various programmes, including literary festivals, workshops, readings, and mentorship initiatives, ANA continues to create opportunities for both established and emerging poets to develop their craft and share their work with wider audiences.
“ANA has also encouraged educational institutions, cultural bodies, and government agencies to strengthen support for literary arts, particularly poetry.
“Greater investment in literature, the association noted, is essential for preserving indigenous languages, nurturing creativity among young people, and sustaining Nigeria’s rich literary heritage.”
As part of the global celebration of World Poetry Day, ANA called on Nigerians to engage more actively with poetry by reading, writing, and sharing poems.
The association noted that poetry remains a powerful tool for cultural expression, social reflection, and the celebration of humanity’s shared experiences.
