The Presidency has dismissed recent allegations by the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, that he is being targeted by the Federal Government, describing the claims as false, misleading and lacking credible evidence.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said Obi’s allegations, including claims that his vehicle was affected at an airport because of government action, were unfounded.
According to Onanuga, the incident involving Obi’s vehicle, by the former Anambra State governor’s own account, could have resulted from a breach of airport parking regulations rather than any form of official harassment.
The presidential aide also rejected Obi’s claim that he might not be alive to participate in the 2027 general election and that individuals were being discouraged from inviting him to social events.
He described the allegations as fabricated and intended to attract public sympathy while diverting attention from what he called the challenges facing Obi’s political movement.
Onanuga further dismissed suggestions that the Federal Government was targeting Fidelity Bank because of Obi’s interest in the financial institution.
He maintained that the bank had continued to perform strongly under the current administration’s economic reforms and insisted that the government had no reason to undermine its operations.
The presidential spokesman said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remained focused on implementing its economic reforms and had neither the time nor the inclination to be distracted by what he described as Obi’s “self-serving narratives.”
He added that the government would continue to concentrate on policies aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians rather than responding to what he termed baseless allegations.
