Burkina Faso’s Young Stallions have defeated Nigeria’s Flying Eagles 4-1 in the final of the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship, ending Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
The defeat at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, also means Nigeria will miss the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which serves as the qualifying tournament for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
The WAFU Zone B final carried significant importance, with the winner securing the region’s qualification ticket for the 2027 U-20 AFCON.
Burkina Faso took advantage of the opportunity in emphatic fashion, racing into a three-goal lead within the opening 15 minutes and putting the Flying Eagles under immense pressure.
Nigeria struggled to cope with the Young Stallions’ attacking intensity and went into the interval facing a daunting deficit.
Coach Abdu Maikaba’s side attempted to mount a comeback after the restart but could not find the goals needed to overturn the early setback.
Burkina Faso eventually added a fourth goal to complete a convincing 4-1 victory, with Nigeria’s consolation goal doing little to alter the outcome.
The defeat was particularly disappointing for the Flying Eagles, who had already lost 2-0 to Burkina Faso in the group stage.
Nigeria had been hoping to avenge that defeat in the final, but the Young Stallions once again proved too strong when it mattered most.
The Flying Eagles had booked their place in the final after a dramatic semi-final victory over hosts Côte d’Ivoire.
The encounter ended 2-2 after regulation time before Nigeria won 4-3 on penalties to advance to the championship decider.
Burkina Faso, meanwhile, maintained their unbeaten run by defeating Niger 2-0 in their semi-final.
The Young Stallions capped their impressive campaign with another commanding performance against Nigeria, securing the WAFU Zone B title and the region’s ticket to the 2027 U-20 AFCON.
For Nigeria, the result brings a disappointing end to their campaign and means the seven-time U-20 AFCON champions will miss the 2027 continental tournament and, consequently, the opportunity to qualify for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
