A group, Northern Nigerian Writers’ Summit (NNWS), on Sunday elected new executive officers to pilot its affairs for a two-year term.
General Secretary of the association, Malam Khalid Imam, said in a press release that the election held at the State Secretariat Conference Hall in Katsina on September 11, 2022 as part of proceedings of the the Conference on Northern Nigerian Indigenous Literatures and Languages, whose theme was: “Indigenous Literatures and Languages as Vehicle for Taming Insecurity in Northern Nigeria”.The election was conducted by a four-man electoral committee under the leadership of Professor Idris Amali, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Federal University, Lafia.
Professors Albishak and Yusuf Adamu served as members while Zaharaddeen Ibrahim Kallah, a former treasurer of the NNWS, served as the secretary of the committee.
At the end of the congress, members of the NNWS voted in the new officials, as follows:
Chairman – Dr. Bashir Abu Sabe
Vice Chairman – Isyaku Bala Ibrahim
General Secretary – Khalid Imam
Assistant General Secretary – Ismail Bala
Financial Secretary – Dr. Shamsudeen Bello
Treasurer – Abubakar Zukogi
PRO, North-central – Tim Cuttings
PRO, North-west – Dr. Murtala Uba Mohammed
PRO, North-east – Nil
Legal Adviser – Ogbe Benson Aduojo, Esq.
Auditor – Fatima Bello
Ex-Officio – Awal Gata
He also appealed to the new executives officers to put all hands on deck in order to reinvigorate the association.
He charged the members and other stakeholders to support him to provide the desired leadership the association needs to attain greater heights.
The election came on the second day of the two-day conference and the first Arewa Literary Awards the NNWS organised.
The conference was declared open on the first day by Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State, who was represented by the state Commissioner of Information, Culture and Home Affairs, Alhaji Abdulkarim Sirika.
The keynote address was presented by Professor Saleh Abdu, a former DVC, Federal University, Kashere.
A paper presentation session by selected literary scholars and writers from parts of the North followed the election, with papers presented in Fulfulde, Hausa, Nupe and Tiv languages.
The unveiling of “Tulu: A Multilingual Anthology of Northern Nigerian New Writings” was the hallmark of the event held on the opening day.
A delegation of NNSW, led by Professor Idris Amali, visited Governor Masari at his residence.
On day two, participants toured some fascinating historic sites in Katsina and the Daura Emir’s palace.
