The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has cancelled the training of Nigerian lecturers in foreign institutions.
Making the announcement in a memo dated November 25, 2024, the Executive Secretary of the organisation, Engineer Sonny S.T. Echono, said the measure became necessary due to “the current excessive cost of training in foreign institutions, coupled with the high rate of abscondment of scholars.”
He said the decision was approved by the TETFund’s board of trustees.
Echono said: “Beneficiary institutions are accordingly advised to prioritise their training needs for implementation locally (in Nigerian institutions).
“It is expected that this will conserve and reduce pressure on foreign exchange rate, boost investment and local capacity in our institutions, while significantly increasing the number of beneficiaries of the intervention.
“The effective date for this policy is January 1, 2024.”
However, he explained that scholars enrolled already in foreign institutions will continue to draw down on their sponsorship up to the end of their respective programmes.
