The “Mama Na, My Devoted” singer, Altine Jibo, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. Born in the early 70s, with the real name Otini Ojone Theresa Abdul Ajibo.
She belongs to the Igala ethnic group. Her first name, Otini, means “Monday” in Igala, which is “Litinin” in Hausa. She adopted the Hausa version of her name, Altine to reflect her upbringing in northern Nigeria.
Altine Jibo grew up in Bauchi State, and she started singing in school choirs. She decided to pursue a musical career after finishing her education, and moved to Lagos.
In Lagos, she got the opportunity to perform with Kakaki, and her performance with them impressed the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), which signed her as a recording artist in the 90s.
Altine Jibo became a household name with her songs which were popular among both Igala and Hausa listeners, as well as other Nigerians who appreciated her fusion. She collaborated with other artists, such as King Sunny Ade, Onyeka Onwenu, and Majek Fashek.
Altine Jibo remained active in the creative industry as a performing artist throughout the early 2000s, until she relocated to Europe for personal reasons.
From 2023, Altine Jibo announced that she was ready to make a comeback with her newly recorded songs and videos, which she planned to release.
Altine Jibo is not just a singer, but a cultural ambassador who showcases the beauty and diversity of Nigeria through her music. She is a proud Igala and Hausa woman who celebrates her heritage and identity with pride and joy.
