The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), has said that sustainable national security cannot be achieved through military operations alone, stressing that the fight against ignorance and hopelessness is essential to building a secure and prosperous nation.

Speaking on Friday at the June 12 Special Edition of The Platform Nigeria, Musa paid tribute to the sacrifices of those who fought for Nigeria’s democracy and called for a broader approach to national security that combines military strength with social and economic development.

Delivering a presentation titled “Securing Our Nation,” the minister said meaningful economic progress can only thrive in an environment where citizens feel safe and protected.

“When we speak of national defence, the instinct is to focus on boots on the ground, air power, or intelligence gathering,” he said, adding, “But true and lasting security is anchored on one critical element: the defeat of ignorance and the conquest of hopelessness. No democracy can flourish where fear dominates daily life.”

Musa noted that while the Armed Forces of Nigeria have recorded significant successes in the fight against insecurity, including the neutralisation of key terrorist leaders and the disruption of major criminal networks, emerging threats continue to evolve.

According to him, criminal groups involved in banditry, kidnapping, cybercrime and violent extremism have become increasingly sophisticated, adapting their tactics and exploiting modern technology to achieve their objectives.

He warned that many of these threats are interconnected and are often amplified through social media platforms, where misinformation and divisive narratives are used to undermine national unity and public confidence.

The minister stressed the need for Nigeria’s security architecture to evolve rapidly in response to these changing realities, particularly through the adoption of technology-driven solutions and enhanced cooperation among security agencies and stakeholders.

He also underscored the importance of safeguarding democratic values, describing democracy as a critical foundation for national stability and development.

This year’s edition of The Platform Nigeria was themed “Governance, Democracy and National Security,” bringing together policymakers, security experts and public affairs commentators to discuss key issues affecting the nation.

Musa’s remarks highlighted the growing recognition that security extends beyond military engagements and includes investments in education, opportunity, social cohesion and democratic governance.
