The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has paid glowing tribute to renowned playwright and scholar, Femi Osofisan, as he marks his 80th birthday, describing him as one of Africa’s most accomplished literary figures whose works have profoundly shaped generations of writers and scholars.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by ANA President, Usman Oladipo Akanbi, and the association’s Acting General Secretary, Wole Adedoyin, the association joined the global literary community in celebrating the eminent dramatist, whose birthday falls on June 16, 2026.
ANA described Osofisan’s life and career as a shining example of intellectual excellence, creative brilliance, and selfless service to literature, education, and society.
The association noted that Osofisan occupies a unique place in the history of Nigerian and African literature, praising his immense contributions to drama, literary criticism, poetry, scholarship and cultural advocacy.
According to the statement, Osofisan’s literary career, which spans more than six decades, stands among the most remarkable achievements in contemporary African literature.
The association noted that he has authored over 60 plays, in addition to numerous poems, essays and critical studies that continue to inspire reflection, preserve cultural heritage and promote social progress.
ANA further commended the veteran scholar for transforming modern African theatre through his innovative adaptation of classical and indigenous narratives.
It said his ability to blend traditional African performance aesthetics with contemporary dramatic techniques expanded the possibilities of theatre as a medium for public engagement, cultural dialogue and social commentary.
The association observed that Osofisan’s works remain relevant because they address issues of justice, inequality, governance and the human condition with exceptional depth and artistic sophistication.
It also praised his unwavering commitment to social justice and his courage in speaking truth to power, noting that throughout his distinguished career, he has consistently used his creative talents to defend the oppressed and challenge corruption, authoritarianism and social injustice.
Beyond his literary achievements, ANA highlighted Osofisan’s role in institution-building within Nigeria’s literary landscape.
The association recalled that as one of ANA’s pioneering figures and its third president, he played a crucial role in strengthening the organisation’s vision and commitment to literary excellence.
The statement further described him as a mentor whose influence extends across generations of writers, academics and cultural practitioners, many of whom have benefited from his wisdom, generosity and guidance.
ANA also acknowledged Osofisan’s interventions during critical periods in the association’s history, saying his principled leadership, institutional memory and calm disposition helped preserve the unity and integrity of the organisation during moments of internal challenges.
The association noted that the decision to name its National Secretariat after him in 2022 was a fitting tribute to his immeasurable contributions to Nigerian literature and ANA itself.
“As Emeritus Professor Femi Osofisan celebrates his 80th birthday, ANA joins family members, colleagues, students, admirers and the international literary community in saluting a towering figure whose influence transcends borders and generations,” the statement said.
The association wished the literary icon continued good health, peace, strength and fulfilment, expressing confidence that his works, ideas and enduring example would continue to inspire writers, scholars and cultural leaders for many years to come.
