The Diaspora African Forum (DAF) Embassy today in Accra, Ghana, honoured renowned Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, with its prestigious Bridge Builders Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to literature, intellectual discourse, and Pan-African ideals.
The award was presented during a special ceremony held at the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre in Accra by the Founder and Head of Mission of the DAF Embassy, Ambassador Dr. Erieka Bennett.
The event celebrated Soyinka’s decades of literary excellence, fearless advocacy for justice, and enduring commitment to the advancement of Africa and its people.
In a permanent tribute to his influence on African identity and global thought, the DAF Embassy also engraved Soyinka’s name on its Supporters’ Wall, a symbolic honour reserved for distinguished friends and partners of Africa’s Diaspora, regarded by the African Union as the continent’s Sixth Region.
Presenting the award, Ambassador Bennett described Soyinka as a towering figure whose commitment to cultural continuity, modernity, and truth aligns with the DAF Embassy’s mission of fostering stronger ties between Africa and its global Diaspora.
“The life and works of Professor Wole Soyinka embody the ideals of bridge-building, intellectual freedom, and unwavering dedication to humanity,” she said.
The ceremony featured several symbolic presentations, including the presentation of the Sixth Region Flag to Soyinka, signifying the African Union’s recognition of the African Diaspora as Africa’s Sixth Region.
Also presented during the event was a copy of the book Visions of Africa, authored by Professor Kwame Addo, as part of efforts to promote scholarly exchange and celebrate Africa’s intellectual heritage.
In another unique gesture, Soyinka received specially crafted Ghanaian chocolate bearing his likeness, showcasing Ghana’s rich cultural traditions through culinary artistry and craftsmanship.
The event attracted members of the DAF Board, cultural stakeholders, and supporters who gathered to celebrate the Nobel Laureate, whose writings and advocacy have continued to shape Africa’s conscience and inspire generations across the world.
The DAF Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to celebrating African excellence and strengthening strategic partnerships between the continent and its Diaspora, while paying tribute to individuals whose legacies continue to unite and uplift Africans across borders.
