LAGOS — The Lagos State Government has commenced the removal of illegal shanties and market stalls erected along the median of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway as part of ongoing efforts to transform the road into a modern 10-lane highway.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the exercise in a statement Sunday, saying the government would not allow the highway median to be converted into a market, residential area or location for illegal structures.
According to the governor, trading, erecting makeshift shops or living on the median of a major highway is unsafe, unlawful and unacceptable.
Sanwo-Olu said the clearance exercise was necessary to protect public infrastructure and ensure the success of the road expansion project.
He urged residents to emulate the civic discipline seen in some of the world’s leading cities, noting that respect for public infrastructure and adherence to regulations are essential for urban development.
The governor also warned against indiscriminate waste disposal and the construction of illegal structures along highways, saying such practices undermine efforts to build a cleaner, safer and more organised Lagos.
He stressed that discipline and personal responsibility must become part of residents’ daily lives if Lagos is to achieve its vision of becoming a world-class city.
The Lagos-Badagry Expressway is currently undergoing reconstruction into a 10-lane highway aimed at improving transportation and easing traffic congestion along one of the state’s busiest road corridors.
