A Kano-based cleric, Lawan Abubakar Triumph, has been taken before the Upper Sharia Court sitting at Kofar Kudu following a complaint by some Islamic groups over alleged blasphemous remarks.
The case was brought before the court in Kano Municipality, where counsel to the complainants, Barrister Aliyu Usman Hajj, told the presiding judge, Justice Ibrahim Sarki Yola, that his clients had filed a direct criminal complaint against the cleric.
Hajj urged the court to transmit the complaint to the Kano State Commissioner of Police for investigation.
But Lawan’s counsel, Barrister Abdurrazak A. Ahmad, requested an adjournment to enable the defence to study the allegations and prepare its response.
The defence also challenged the jurisdiction of the court to entertain the case. Barrister Ibrahim Umar was part of the legal team representing the cleric.
The complainants further sought an order directing the closure of the mosque led by Lawan pending the determination of the case.
The court, however, declined the request, ruling that it lacked the authority to order the closure of the mosque.
After listening to submissions from both sides, Justice Yola adjourned the case until September 24, 2026, when the court is expected to state its position on the matter.
The allegations against Lawan remain to be determined by the court.
