Amnesty International has condemned the killing of renowned Islamic preacher, Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka, who was reportedly shot dead by gunmen on motorbikes in Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State.
The cleric was killed tonight as he stepped out of his residence to attend his usual evening preaching session, according to a statement by the human rights organisation.
Amnesty International described the killing as brutal and called on Nigerian authorities to immediately launch an effective investigation into the incident.
The organisation urged the authorities to ensure that anyone suspected of involvement in the killing is brought to justice.
It said Sheikh Masussuka had consistently used his preaching to promote cooperation, peaceful coexistence, interfaith dialogue and mutual understanding among Muslim faithful.
The late cleric was also known for speaking out against violent extremism and radicalisation.
Amnesty International further disclosed that Sheikh Masussuka had faced threats to his life and intimidation throughout his lifetime.
The organisation’s condemnation comes amid calls for accountability and improved protection for religious leaders who promote peace and peaceful coexistence in their communities.
