On the eve of his departure from office, President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the renaming of 15 airports after some prominent Nigerians, including himself.
In a press release, the Head of Press and Public Affairs of the Ministry of Aviation, Mr. Odutayo Oluseyi, revealed on Sunday that the airports and their new names are:
- Maiduguri International Airport, Muhammadu Buhari
- Akure International Airport, named after Olumuyiwa Bernard Aliu
- Benin International Airport – now Oba Akinzua ii
- Dutse International Airport, renamed Muhammed Nuhu Sanusi
- Ebonyi International Airport, now known as Chuba Okagdigbo
- Gombe International Airport, renamed Brigadier Zakari Maimalari
- Ibadan International Airport, named as Samuel Ladoke Akintola
- Ilorin International Airport, named as General Tunde Abdullahi Idiagbon
- Kaduna International Airport, Gen. Hassan Usman Katsina
- Makurdi International Airport, renamed after Joseph Sarwuan Tarka
- Minna International Airport, renamed Malam Abubakar Imam
- Nasarrawa International Airport, named after Sheikh Usman Danfodio
- Osubi International Airport, renamed Alfred Diete Spiff
- Port Harcourt International Airport, renamed Obafemi Jeremiah Awolowo
- Yola International Airport, to be known as Lamido Aliyu Mustapha Airport
