The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) is suing President Bola Tinubu’s administration over failure to publish details of loan obtained by former presidents.

The organisation described the move as necessary so as to ensure financial transparency.

SERAP wants the government to publish detailed reports on how loans taken by former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Yar’Adua, Goodluck Jonathan, and Muhammadu Buhari were spent.

The lawsuit, filed last Friday in Lagos, aims to force Finance Minister Wale Edun and the Debt Management Office to reveal how these billions of dollars in loans were used.

SERAP believes that knowing how public money is spent is crucial for democracy and holding the government accountable.

The organization says transparency is key for Nigerians to judge their government, especially given ongoing poverty and poor public services despite heavy borrowing.

In a statement on Sunday, SERAP’s Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare said the case could significantly improve financial transparency and accountability in Nigeria.
