The Motion Picture Practitioners Association of Nigeria (MOPPAN) has stated that 2025 was a year filled with milestones, achievements, and progress for the Hausa film industry.

In a statement released by MOPPAN titled “Report on the Year 2025 for Kannywood Practitioners,” the association said: “Although 2025 came with many challenges, it was nevertheless a blessed year that witnessed an increase in the production of high-quality films, as well as the use of new technologies and styles in the Kannywood industry.

“Filmmakers demonstrated commitment and dedication in producing films that educate, entertain, and convey meaningful messages to society.”

According to MOPPAN, “Significant progress was recorded in storytelling, cinematography, film editing, and adherence to professional standards, which helped to elevate the status of Kannywood at the national, African, and global levels.”

The association highlighted five films that stood out during the year, as follows:

  • KAKANDA: A film written by producers Dr. Ahmad Sarari and Malam Khalid Musa. It features a strong storyline, modern style, and solid structure, which greatly captured audience interest.
  • MANYAN MATA: A film by producer Abdul Amart that emphasises the value of women and the roles they play in society. It received wide acceptance from viewers.
  • GARWASHI: A film by producer Umar UK that portrays struggle and resilience in human life, demonstrating exceptional skill in writing and execution.
  • LABARI NA: A film by director Malam Aminu Saira, noted for its creativity and depth in storytelling and direction.
  • WATA SHIDA: A film by producer Hayatuddeen Yakubu, adapted from a book by Kamilu Ɗanhausa. It gained acceptance both locally and across African countries, showcasing the strength of Hausa storytelling to the world.

The report also mentioned ‘Mai Martaba,’ produced and directed by Prince Aboki, as the most popular film of the year 2024. According to MOPPAN, the film achieved numerous successes and further elevated the global profile of Kannywood.

MOPPAN also commended the contributions of its National President, Alhaji Shehu Hassan Kano, for his leadership and efforts in promoting unity and developing the film industry.

The association expressed gratitude to all producers and other Kannywood practitioners for their loyalty and support.

Finally, it prayed that God would reward everyone with goodness and grant everyone the opportunity to witness the year 2026 in peace and good health.
