The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has unveiled the programme for its 45th International Convention and Conference, with a special focus on literature and national security.

The four-day convention, with the theme, “Literature, National Security, and the Place of Nigeria in the World,” is scheduled to hold from October 29 to November 1, 2026, at the Mamman Vatsa Writers’ Village, Maitama Extension, Mpape, Abuja.

It will bring together writers, poets, scholars and other stakeholders in the literary and creative industries to examine the role of literature in national development, security and Nigeria’s international standing.

The programme was announced in a statement jointly issued by ANA President, Dr. Usman Oladipo Akanbi, and Acting General Secretary, Wole Adedoyin.

According to the statement, Professor Mahfouz Adedimeji will deliver the keynote address, while Professor Bukar Usman will chair the opening ceremony. Akanbi will serve as the chief host.

Activities will begin on Thursday, October 29, with the arrival and registration of participants, followed by the Festival of Life, featuring literary readings, spoken-word performances, songs and other artistic presentations.

The grand opening ceremony is scheduled for Friday, October 30, alongside the launch of the Ken Saro-Wiwa Anthology. The day will also feature a session of the Mbari Series and a convention play.

On Saturday, October 31, members will hold the association’s Annual General Meeting to deliberate on its activities, progress and future direction.

A panel discussion featuring DSP Zayd Ibn Isah, Dr. Alexander Ochogwu Emmanuel and Toyin Adewale-Gabriel will also hold, with Odoh Diego Okenyodo as moderator. The session is expected to explore the convention’s central themes and the responsibilities of writers and intellectuals in addressing Nigeria’s challenges.

The day’s programme will conclude with an awards and dinner night to recognise literary excellence and celebrate individuals whose contributions have enriched Nigerian literature and the wider creative community.

ANA said the convention would provide opportunities for networking, collaboration and the exchange of ideas among writers and other participants from within and outside the country.

It noted that the theme was particularly relevant at a time when national security, social cohesion, identity and Nigeria’s position in an increasingly interconnected world remained important issues.

The association said the gathering would examine how literature could interrogate power, preserve collective memory, promote dialogue and encourage constructive engagement with national challenges.

ANA reaffirmed its commitment to advancing Nigerian literature, promoting reading and writing, nurturing literary talent and providing a platform for intellectual engagement with issues affecting society.

Participants are expected to depart on Sunday, November 1, following the conclusion of the convention.

The association has invited its members, writers, scholars, literary organisations, cultural institutions, media practitioners and the general public to participate in the event.
