The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has expressed profound appreciation to the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force for their swift and decisive intervention following yesterday’s mob attack on the Benin Tollgate Unit Command Office of the agency, located along the Benin–Lagos Expressway.

The incident occurred after a crash scene rescue operation around the Benin Tollgate axis, during which two trucks reportedly collided, resulting in the death of one of the truck drivers and critical injuries to FRSC personnel.

One of the officers later succumbed to injuries despite urgent medical attention.

In the aftermath of the crash, an angry mob besieged and vandalised the Unit Command formation.

However, prompt response by security agencies, helped to restore order and prevent further escalation.

In a press statement issued today by the Assistant Corps Marshal, Corps Public Education Officer, FRSC headquarters in Abuja, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Marshal condemned the attack on personnel and facilities of the agency, describing it as “deeply regrettable and unacceptable.”

He argued that the FRSC operatives were on lawful duty to save lives when the tragic crash occurred.

While commiserating with the family of the driver, the fallen officer and the entire FRSC workforce, Mohammed ordered a comprehensive investigation into the immediate and remote cause of the crash as well as the circumstances that led to the mob action.

He assured the public that anyone found culpable will be brought to justice in accordance with the law.

The Corps Marshal reaffirmed his agency’s commitment to its mandate of ensuring safer roads for all Nigerians and called on the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and supportive of FRSC activities in this regard.
