Heavy rainfall over recent days has led to severe flooding in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State, affecting both residential areas and major roads.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that prolonged rain on Wednesday caused significant flooding in Ibeju-Lekki and other key locations.
Areas impacted by the flooding include Epe, Eredo, Bogije, Labora, Abijon, Sangotedo, Awoyaya, and Ibeju-Lekki.
Residents told NAN that the flooding was caused by blocked waterways due to improper waste disposal in the area.
Mr. Rasheed Ayobami, a resident of Labora in Ibeju-Lekki, mentioned that his house was submerged due to the absence of a functional drainage system in his neighborhood.
He reported, “There is too much water flowing into my compound, the entire house is submerged. I live in a new site where there is no drainage which makes the water run into residential homes, rendering us homeless because we can’t sleep inside the water.”
Seyi Arowosaye, another resident, expressed frustration over the recurring flooding on the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway, attributing it to clogged drains.
Arowosaye urged the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government to clear the drains and advised residents to stop dumping waste in drainage systems to prevent further flooding. He also called on the Lagos State Government to expedite road repairs in the Sangotedo area.
Mrs. Bola Fadugba shared her distress over the downpour and flooding in Labora.
“I live in Labora but during the rainy season I do relocate with my family to my younger sister’s house in the Eputu area. Flood has taken over my house due to lack of drainage in the environment. So many areas in the metropolis are also affected by flooding, the government should find a lasting solution to this perennial flooding challenge,” she said.
NAN reports that flooding also affected roads such as Abraham Adesanya, Awoyaya, Sangotedo, and Majek in Ibeju-Lekki, partly due to ongoing road repairs in the area.
