Amnesty International has expressed deep concern over what it called the “sectarian and unlawful attempts” to clampdown on the Katsina-based Muslim cleric, Malam Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka, by the Katsina State government.

Masussuka, a controversial cleric who rejects the Hadiths or Sayings of Prophet Muhammad, arguing they were fabricated hundreds of years after the demise of the holy Prophet, has been invited by the state government to defend his position before a panel of Muslim clerics.

The invitation was extended to him yesterday.

Amnesty International said it is “deeply concerned by the desperate, sectarian and unlawful attempts to clampdown on Malam Yahya Masussuka — who is an Islamic cleric widely known for preaching and teaching peacefully.”

In a statement, the human rights organisation said: “Attempts to manipulate the powers of government to shut up Malam Masussuka and close down his schools, despite lack of any evidence that he was contravening the law must stop. This pattern of intolerance undermines freedom of religion and silences those with differing views and opinions.

“Clearly, there is a sectarian gang up to punish Malam Masussuka simply for speaking out peacefully. The Islamic cleric is widely known for preaching against violent extremism and encouraging dialogue.

“Under Nigeria’s constitution and international law, the rights to freedom of religion and thought are protected — and every person is entitled to enjoy these rights without fear or intimidation.”

Amnesty called on the Nigerian authorities to protect the rights and safety of Masussuka “and every person” in line with the country’s human rights obligations.
