In his statement, Okoye revealed that the attack took place on Tuesday morning while the gunmen were conducting a stop-and-search operation in the Akabor community.
He mentioned that Imo State Commissioner of Police, Danjuma Aboki, had deployed the command’s Special Tactical Squad to work with other security agencies to apprehend the assailants.
“The tragic incident was perpetrated in the early hours of Tuesday, June 11, 2024, by hoodlums suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate Eastern Security Network (ESN) who attacked the operatives in their numbers firing sporadically.
“The operatives fought gallantly but unfortunately, two personnel and a civilian were fatally hit.”
Okoye added that Aboki expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and assured the people of Imo State that every effort would be made to bring the perpetrators to justice.
