The recent appointment of a Special Hajj Committee by Governor Uba Sani to oversee Hajj operations in Kaduna State has sparked considerable interest. This committee, granted unprecedented powers and mandate, is tasked with transforming and revolutionising the Hajj experience for Kaduna pilgrims.

Historically, Hajj committees in Kaduna have faced challenges due to overlapping responsibilities with existing agencies and unclear mandates. However, this new committee has taken a different approach.

By assuming direct management of the Kaduna State Pilgrims Welfare Agency, the committee has streamlined decision-making and implementation processes.

The Kaduna State House of Assembly’s declaration of a State of Emergency on the agency further empowers the committee to restructure and reorganise for optimal efficiency.

This move, coupled with the addition of two experienced Hajj specialists, Sheikh Halliru Abdullahi Maraya and Alhaji Abdullahi Bayero, strengthens the committee’s expertise and capacity.
The committee’s composition reflects a strategic blend of skill and experience. AVM Muhammad R. Dabo (rtd) brings valuable security expertise, Malam Kasim Aminu possesses in-depth knowledge of Hajj finances, and religious scholars like Prof Muhammad M. Gwadabe and Sheikh Halliru Maraya provide guidance on Hajj rituals.

The inclusion of Ummul Khulsim Jibril Maigwari and Hajiya Maimuna Waziri ensures that the unique needs of female pilgrims are addressed.

To achieve a successful Hajj, the committee must prioritise several key areas:

  • Stakeholder Management: Balancing the interests of various stakeholders while upholding established rules and guidelines.
  • Pilgrim Welfare: Ensuring pilgrims receive adequate care, support, and access to essential services.
  • Information Management: Providing clear and timely information to pilgrims to address concerns and manage expectations.
  • Saudi Vision 2030: Aligning Kaduna’s Hajj operations with the Saudi government’s vision for a more modern and efficient pilgrimage experience.
  • Legal Framework: Reviewing and potentially amending the Kaduna State Pilgrims Welfare Agency law to address inconsistencies with national regulations.

Governor Uba Sani’s commitment to depoliticizing Hajj operations is commendable. Continued support for the agency and its mandate will be crucial for its success.

The Special Hajj Committee has the potential to significantly improve the Hajj experience for Kaduna pilgrims. By focusing on efficiency, transparency, and pilgrim-centric services, the committee can ensure a smoother and more fulfilling journey for all.
