The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of bandits, describing the incident as a tragic loss to the state and the nation.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, the government said the former senior military officer died while being held captive despite sustained efforts by security agencies and the state government to secure his release.
According to the statement, the retired general died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity. Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy,” the statement said.
Major General Abubakar, a former senior officer of the Nigerian Army, was abducted by bandits in Katsina State. His death comes amid growing concerns over the activities of armed criminal groups operating in parts of the North-West region.
The Katsina State Government described his abduction and subsequent death as a monumental loss not only to his family and the state but also to the entire country.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased and Nigerians at large, describing the incident as a “dark moment” for the state.
The governor said the tragedy underscores the urgent need for a united and intensified effort against criminal elements threatening the peace and security of communities across the region.

Radda reaffirmed the commitment of the Katsina State Government to continue working closely with the Federal Government and security agencies to ensure that those responsible for the abduction are brought to justice.
He also assured residents that the government’s determination to eliminate banditry and guarantee the safety of citizens remains unwavering.
The state government extended its prayers and condolences to the bereaved family, praying for the peaceful repose of the late retired general’s soul.
