Aisha Sani Maikudi, a Professor of Law from Katsina State, has emerged as the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja.
The Senate of the university elected her in acting capacity at its valedictory session held on Thursday following the end of the tenure of Professor AbdulRasheed Na’Allah as the 6th Vice Chancellor of the university on June 30, 2024 pending the inauguration of the university’s Governing Council and the appointment of a substantive VC.
The 41-year-old Maikudi, a Professor of International Law, is the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the institution.
In her acceptance speech, she expressed gratitude to members of the Senate for the confidence reposed in her.
She said: “I want to extend my deepest respect and appreciation to you all for the strong support and unwavering commitment that you have accorded me.”
New Citizen has learnt that she is the daughter of Dr. Asma’u Maikudi, the current INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Zamfara State.
Born in Zaria, Kaduna State, on January 31, 1983, Aisha Maikudi attended Queens College, Lagos, where she obtained her West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
She obtained Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and Master of Laws (LLM) degrees from University of Reading and the London School of Economics (LSE) in the United Kingdom respectively.
She also attended the Nigeria Law School, Abuja, for her call to the Bar.
In 2007, Aisha Maikudi participated in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at the corporate secretariat and Legal Division of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
In 2008, she joined the University of Abuja as a lecturer and became the first female and youngest Head of the Department, Faculty of Law in 2014; the first female and youngest Deputy Dean, Faculty of Law, in 2018, and the pioneer Director University of Abuja.
She obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law from University of Abuja where she is reportedly the youngest professor and indeed Nigeria, as well as the first female Professor of Law in the North-west and the University of Abuja.
Her area of specialisation is United Nations Law and has written extensively on it.
Maikudi floated a postgraduate course on United Nations Law and has supervised numerous undergraduate and postgraduate works at the university.
She has taught Company Law for over 12 years and is well-versed in its mechanics. She has participated in numerous conferences and trainings worldwide.
She is a member of various professional associations, including the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the Nigerian Law Teachers Association (NLTA), and the International Federation of Women Lawyers (IFWL).
Professor Aisha Maikudi is married with children.
