As Professor Gausu Ahmad concludes a noble career and enters a well-deserved retirement, we pause to honour a man whose influence spans decades and whose legacy is etched in the annals of Nigerian journalism and academic excellence.

From his early days in the newsroom to the lecture halls of Bayero University Kano, Professor Ahmad exemplified a rare blend of integrity, intellect, and purposeful leadership. His editorial roles at the New Nigerian and Concord newspapers marked him as a champion of ethical journalism, one who wielded his pen not for prestige, but for principle. During turbulent times in Nigeria’s history, his voice remained a steady compass for truth and accountability.

When he transitioned into academia, he brought more than professional experience—he brought perspective, humility, and a passion for nurturing future generations.

At the Department of Mass Communication, Bayero University, Kano, Prof. Gausu’s approach to teaching went beyond theory; it was grounded in real-world insight. As one of his students, we didn’t just learn to write and edit—we learned to think critically, question systematically, and create strategically with purpose. His courses such as writing review and criticism, newspaper production and media law and ethics became touchstones of quality education.

As Head of Mass Communication Department who facilicitated my appointment as a Graduate Assistant, and later a leading figure in the formation of the Faculty of Communication, Professor Ahmad guided with vision and grace. He mentored with kindness, challenged with fairness, and inspired with his unshakable commitment to excellence. His calm demeanor and unwavering standards earned him the respect of colleagues and students alike.

His scholarly contributions are equally impactful. His 2016 publication, “The Rise and Fall of the New Nigerian Newspaper”, stands as a definitive work on the history of the northern Nigerian press. And in 2022, his elevation to Professor of Mass Communication fittingly recognized a career of substance, scholarship, and service.

Yet it is not just his professional milestones that we celebrate, it is the values he embodied. Integrity, patience, and modesty. A deep belief in the transformative power of education and truth. These are the qualities that define Malam Gausu’s legacy more than any title or accolade.

As we bid farewell to Malam’s formal academic life, we do so with immense gratitude. He leaves behind a generation of journalists and communication scholars shaped by his guidance, and a field better for his contributions. May his retirement be filled with the same quiet fulfillment and purpose that marked his career.

Thank you, Malam Professor Gausu Ahmad. You have left an indelible mark—not only as a scholar—but as a human being of the highest order.

Your obedient student forever, Mainasara Kurfi.
