The House of Representatives has called for sanction against the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, and six Area Council Chairmen for insubordination and disregarding the House’s directives.

During a meeting of the House Committee on FCT Area Council and Ancillary in Abuja on Tuesday, Rep. Ikonne Ifeanyi expressed frustration over the Minister and chairmen’s failure to appear before the House as summoned.

“Why must we invite someone here and they give us a date for their appearance? This disrespect cannot continue. We should not be begging them to appear,” Ifeanyi asserted.

He proposed that henceforth, the Minister and chairmen should initiate contact with the House, suggesting that failure to comply could lead to serious consequences.

“I move a motion to bring this issue to the House floor for them to explain their refusal to honor our invitation,” Ifeanyi added.

Committee Chairman Rep. Fredrick Agbedi condemned their actions as a breach of constitutional duty and a disservice to their constituents.

“The oversight function of this committee is crucial for ensuring accountability and good governance. Their refusal to appear before us undermines this process,” Agbedi emphasized.

He criticized the chairmen for not initiating any significant projects despite substantial financial allocations to their councils.

In support, Rep. Adesola Adebayo stressed the House’s authority to oversee council activities and warned against undermining legislative oversight.

“Their refusal to appear is disrespectful to the House. We should apply maximum pressure to ensure they are accountable,” Adebayo stated.

While some members suggested giving them another chance, Rep. Sada Soli proposed discussing further actions in a closed session. (NAN)
