The House of Representatives has dissolved the ad-hoc Joint Committee on Downstream and Midstream Committee, which was investigating the activities of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Ltd. (NNPCL) and the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
The House of Representatives spokesperson, Rep. Akin Rotimi, announced this on Monday in Abuja.
He mentioned that a new ad-hoc committee would be established to take over the same responsibilities.
The original committee was assigned to look into the importation of contaminated petroleum products, the lack of crude oil for local refineries, and other critical energy security concerns.
Rotimi explained that the dissolution was intended to ensure the investigation’s effectiveness and independence.
The spokesperson added that the new committee would be made up of members chosen for their expertise, competence, and integrity.
Rotimi emphasized the House’s commitment to addressing these crucial issues and ensuring comprehensive oversight.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that on July 3, 118 members under the banner of “1 AGENDA” published an advertorial in three national newspapers, allegedly to protect NNPCL in the now-disbanded investigation.
NAN also noted that some lawmakers whose names appeared in the advertorial have distanced themselves from it. (NAN)
