Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello (1910-1966), the Sardauna of Sokoto and Premier of the Northern Region, inspecting Nigerian Army officer-cadets at Mons Officer Cadet School in Aldershot, England, on July 17, 1962.

Behind the Sardauna is Brigadier J.T.U. Aguiyi-Ironsi (1924-1966), then the serving military attache at the Nigerian High Commission in London.

The fate of both men was sealed in different ways.

The Sardauna was assassinated on the 15th January, 1966 in Kaduna.(The infamous 1966 coup)

J.T.U. Aguiyi-Ironsi was assassinated on 29th July, 1966 at Lalupon in Ibadan. (The infamous “July Rematch”,  also known as the “Counter  Coup” of 1966).
