Sentiments
I sat down
Heard the voices of hate
From a recognised voice
Something I never thought
You know there’s more to people
Than what meets the eyes
But this ‘more’ is the mystery
Which when it unfolds
It either kills you or gives you life
I fear the insides of people
I just wish my vision could pierce through the chest
Know what’s running through that
Dirty mind
Clean mind
Beautiful mind
Ugly mind
Just wish I could see.

The Story
This poem is a product of a mixture of feelings: sadness, grief and relief. I have had a series of friends who were nice to me at a time and suddenly became a version I didn’t recognise and how others showed me so much love in front of my eyes but would do the worst to me behind my back.

The Poet
Mariya Yaya Bappah, a 4th year medical student of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, is a budding poet and spoken word artiste. Born and brought up in Bauchi, she found poetry accidentally and it has now become a part of her even though the nature of her studies doesn’t let her write often now. Her mom has been of great support in her creative journey. She has written quite a number of poems.
