A soldier committed suicide at the gate of the Ngwa High School Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Aba, Abia state.
The soldier, a Sergeant Major from Ngor Okpuala Local Government Area in Imo State, had been missing for about two weeks prior to the incident.
According to a military source, the Sergeant Major disappeared without any trace and could not be contacted by his colleagues or military authorities despite several attempts. He was due to retire in October of this year.
The soldier unexpectedly returned to the base last Saturday. Before anyone could question his two-week absence, he used his firearm to end his life in front of the base. No suicide note was found, and his reasons remain unknown.
Colleagues reported that there were no signs of domestic issues or disciplinary actions that might have led to his suicide.
