President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Justice Stella Anukam on her re-election as Judge of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights for another six-year term.
This announcement was made in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Chief Ajuri Ngelale.
Justice Anukam secured her re-election during the African Union Mid-Year Coordination Meeting Executive Council held in Accra, Ghana, on Friday.
She obtained her law degree from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, in 1984 and was called to the Nigerian Bar in August 1985.
In addition to being a chartered secretary and arbitrator, Justice Anukam has a distinguished career in administration.
Her previous roles include serving as Director of Special Programmes at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and as Director of the International and Comparative Law Department at the Federal Ministry of Justice.
President Tinubu praised Justice Anukam for her significant contributions to human rights jurisprudence in Africa and encouraged her to continue leveraging her expertise at the African Court.
He also affirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting qualified Nigerians in international roles, emphasizing Nigeria’s strategic importance on the global stage.
The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, established by African states, works to protect human and peoples’ rights across the continent and complements the work of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
The court is composed of eleven judges elected by the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government. Nigeria ratified the Protocol establishing the Court in 2004.
