The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has scrapped the Ministry of Sports Development and the Ministry of Niger Delta, as well as merged the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy.

The decisions were taken at the meeting of the council chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja today.

The move, which the Special Adviser Information and Strategy to the President, Bayo Onanuga, announced on his X handle, precedes the long rumoured reshuffle of President Tinubu’s cabinet.

Onanuga explained that there will now be a Ministry of Regional Development to oversee all the regional development commissions, that is the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), North-West Development Commission (NWDC), South-West Development Commission (SWDC), and the North-East Development Commission (SEDC).

He said the National Sports Commission (NSC) will take over the activities of the Ministry of Sports Development.

Onanuga was, however, quiet on the fate of the ministers affected by the scrapping or merger of the ministries.

Before the FEC meeting, President Tinubu swore in Dr Abdullahi Usman Bello as Chairman of the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

Bello will oversee the operations and key activities at the CCB in line with the provisions of the code of conduct and ethical standards.

Speaking with State House correspondents after the ceremony, the new CCB chairman said Nigeria has the necessary systems and institutions to combat corruption.

He said he intends to focus on delivering the bureau’s mandate to ensure integrity and prevent corruption.
