ABUJA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will attend and address world leaders at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) scheduled to hold in New York, United States, in September.
Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, disclosed this on Wednesday after a meeting with the President at the State House in Abuja.
According to Ibrahim, President Tinubu confirmed his participation while approving Nigeria’s preparations for this year’s General Assembly.
“The president has given us his word. He will attend the UN General Assembly this September,” the ambassador said.
He explained that President Tinubu would participate in a number of high-level side events focusing on energy, education and hospital management during the week-long gathering.
Ibrahim said the President would also use the global platform to present Nigeria’s ongoing economic and governance reforms to the international community, while engaging world leaders on issues of regional security.
According to him, Tinubu will advocate stronger border policing across West Africa to tackle growing security threats associated with porous borders.
He added that Nigeria is already collaborating with the United Nations on a regional border policing initiative and would seek broader international support for the programme during the Assembly.
President Tinubu personally attended the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly in 2023, while Vice-President Kashim Shettima represented him at the 79th and 80th sessions.
The 81st Session of the UN General Assembly is scheduled to open on September 8, with the General Debate—during which heads of state and government will deliver their national statements—taking place from September 22 to 28.
The annual gathering will bring together world leaders to deliberate on major global issues, including climate change, sustainable development, international peace and security.
