The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, has condemned the killing of 15 farmers by suspected terrorists in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State.
Kyari, in a statement issued this Sunday, expressed sadness over the incident, saying the farmers were killed while working on their farms to earn a living and contribute to the nation’s food supply.
The minister extended his condolences to the families of the victims, the people of Marte and the Borno State Government, led by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum.
He said the killing of farmers was not only an attack on lives and livelihoods but also a threat to efforts to improve food security in the country.
Kyari commended security agencies for their efforts to protect farming communities and urged them to intensify operations to apprehend those responsible for the killings.
He also called on the security agencies to locate the three people reportedly still missing following the incident.
The minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, to creating an environment where farmers can cultivate their lands safely and productively.
“Protecting our farmers is protecting Nigeria’s food security,” Kyari said.
He prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and for comfort for their families, while calling for continued protection of farmers, rural communities and the country.
