President of the Senate and Chairman of Nigeria’s National Assembly, Senator Godswill Akpabio, is leading Nigeria’s delegation to the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Arusha, Tanzania.
The IPU Assembly is scheduled to hold from October 4 to 9, 2026, in the United Republic of Tanzania, bringing together parliamentarians from member countries to deliberate on issues relating to governance, democracy, human rights and inclusive development.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Office of the Senate President, all statutory bodies of the IPU will meet during the assembly.
These include the Governing Council, Standing Committees, the Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians and the Committee on Middle East Questions. The Forum of Women Parliamentarians and the Forum of Young Parliamentarians will also hold meetings as part of the assembly.
The statement said the Governing Council is expected to elect a new President of the IPU during its session in Arusha.
The General Debate will focus on the theme, “Enhancing good governance and empowering communities through inclusivity, trust and opportunities for all.”
The debate is expected to provide a platform for delegates to exchange views and develop parliamentary actions aimed at advancing inclusive governance and community empowerment.
The assembly will also consider resolutions on an emergency item and a subject item to be taken up by the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights.
The subject item is titled “Inclusive social development for all: Parliamentary strategies to promote the rights and empowerment of people living with disabilities.”
The 153rd IPU Assembly is expected to conclude with the adoption of an outcome document reflecting deliberations on the overall theme of the General Debate.
