Muslims have formed a WhatsApp group to centralise the announcement of Muslim funeral prayers, known as Janazah, across Kaduna State.

The initiative, spearheaded by a former Commissioner of Education in the state, Shehu Usman Muhammad Makarfi, aims to tackle the challenge of delayed notifications and enhance community participation in the essential religious rite.

The digital platform, modelled after successful templates in cities like Abuja, provides a dedicated channel for sharing critical details, including the name and gender of the deceased, the time and location of the Janazah prayer, and the designated cemetery.

The community response has been notably positive, with the group rapidly attracting over 500 members since its launch.

In a press statement, Makarfi explained that the primary goal of the initiative is to serve the Muslim community by ensuring individuals can easily fulfill the religious obligation of attending Janazah prayers.

He emphasised that the platform operates under stringent guidelines to maintain its focus.

“This group will solely be a platform for announcements related to funeral prayers,” he said, adding, “Religious commentaries, debates, and discussions on unrelated topics are strictly prohibited. The platform is exclusively dedicated to that purpose.”

Stakeholders have praised the initiative for its potential to streamline the process of mobilising community members swiftly after a death, which is particularly crucial given the Islamic tradition of prompt burial.

The WhatsApp group is an independent community initiative and maintains no affiliation with any existing cemetery management or burial societies.
