The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has congratulated Nigerian poet, lawyer and human rights activist, Ogaga Ifowodo, on winning the 2026 Nigeria Prize for Literature, worth $100,000, for his poetry collection, Why Does God Need a Gun?

Ifowodo was announced as the winner at the grand award night organised by Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) in Lagos on Friday, October 9, 2026.

In a statement issued by its President, Dr Usman Oladipo Akanbi, and Acting General Secretary, Wole Adedoyin, ANA described the achievement as a proud moment for the Nigerian literary community and a testament to the enduring power of poetry as a medium for artistic expression, social commentary and intellectual engagement.

The association said the award highlighted the capacity of Nigerian writers to produce works that address critical issues, explore human experiences and contribute to contemporary literary discourse.

It expressed confidence that Ifowodo’s success would attract greater national and international attention to Nigerian poetry while encouraging wider appreciation of the country’s literary heritage.

ANA recalled that Ifowodo had previously won the ANA Prize for Poetry in 1996, the ANA/Cadbury Poetry Prize in 2003 and the ANA/Gabriel Okara Poetry Prize in 2005.

It said the latest recognition represented another milestone in his literary career and reflected his sustained contribution to Nigerian poetry.

The association also commended NLNG for sustaining the Nigeria Prize for Literature, which was established in 2004 and has become one of Africa’s most valuable literary awards.

It noted that the prize rotates among prose fiction, poetry, drama and children’s literature, providing Nigerian writers with a platform to showcase their creativity and gain wider recognition.

ANA said the 2026 edition’s focus on poetry offered an opportunity to celebrate the depth, diversity and continuing relevance of poetic expression in Nigeria.

The association also recalled Ifowodo’s participation in its 44th International Convention in 2025, where he presented an article titled “I Pushed My Way Through”. The piece reflected on an encounter with Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka and the lessons his prolific writing, travels and intellectual curiosity offered to writers across generations.

ANA said Ifowodo’s achievement should inspire established and emerging writers to pursue originality, discipline and excellence in their creative work.

It urged literary institutions, cultural organisations and other stakeholders to continue creating opportunities for writers to develop their talents and reach wider audiences.

The association also congratulated the two other shortlisted poets, Tares Oburumu and James Ugwu Eze, commending their creativity and commitment to poetry.

It said their inclusion among the finalists demonstrated the depth of talent within Nigeria’s literary community and encouraged them to remain committed to their creative pursuits.

ANA reaffirmed its congratulations to Ifowodo and commended NLNG for its continued investment in literary excellence, describing the prize as an important platform for promoting reading, celebrating writers and strengthening Nigeria’s cultural identity through literature.
