The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Abuja Chapter, has announced that its Guest Author of the Month for August 2025 will be the distinguished poet, playwright, literary essayist, and cultural advocate, Denja Abdullahi.

Abdullahi is also a former President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA).

A statement signed by Wole Adedoyin, a publicist for the association, said this month’s literary gathering, themed “Celebrating the Embrace of Theatre and Poetry with Denja Abdullahi,” will hold on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at the Mamman Vatsa Writers Village, Mpape, Abuja, starting at 1:00 p.m.

Adedoyin said: “This special edition of ANA Abuja’s monthly literary event will mark a milestone in the history of the Chapter as it stages, for the first time, a live theatrical performance alongside its customary readings and author conversations.

“The initiative seeks to broaden the Chapter’s artistic horizon by fusing the vibrancy of theatre with the reflective depth of poetry, creating a unique experience for attendees.

“Denja Abdullahi, the celebrated guest, is a name synonymous with literary excellence and cultural stewardship in Nigeria.

“A former President of the Association of Nigerian Authors and a retired Director at the National Council for Arts and Culture, Abdullahi has long been recognised as one of the foremost voices in the promotion of Nigerian literature, theatre, and cultural identity.

“Author of several acclaimed works, including Mairogo, Death and the King’s Grey Hair, and A Thousand Years of Thirst, Denja Abdullahi has proven himself a writer of remarkable breadth and vision.

“His works traverse themes of tradition, modernity, spirituality, politics, and human survival, consistently resonating with both local and international audiences.

“At a time when the creative arts are increasingly becoming vehicles of social reflection and national reawakening, Abdullahi has distinguished himself as a writer who treats poetry as a tool of action and theatre as a medium of renewal.

“His artistic philosophy underscores the idea that literature, in its many forms, can serve as a force for education, advocacy, and cultural preservation.”

Adedoyin added that the August gathering “promises a captivating lineup that includes dramatic performances inspired by Abdullahi’s plays, readings from his poetry, a moderated conversation with the author, and an interactive Q\&A session with the audience.

“Attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase autographed copies of his books and engage with him on his lifelong journey as a literary mentor and cultural builder.”

According to the organisers, the decision to introduce theatrical performance into the Chapter’s monthly activities “reflects ANA Abuja’s renewed commitment to innovation in programming,” adding, “By doing so, the Chapter aims to strengthen the connection between writers, performers, and audiences, fostering a richer appreciation for the power of words on stage and page alike.”

The Association extends an open invitation to writers, readers, students, theatre lovers, cultural enthusiasts, and members of the public to attend this historic event.

“Together, we will celebrate a man who has not only chronicled Nigerian literary history but has also actively shaped its future through mentorship, leadership, and creative excellence,” he said.
