The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a warning to the public about a planned protest against the Commission.
According to the EFCC, a shadowy group has been actively using social media to recruit young Nigerians, including students, to participate in a protest against the Commission.
The campaign is being portrayed as resistance to the EFCC’s enforcement activities, particularly those related to cybercrimes.
The Commission expressed alarm over emerging evidence suggesting that corrupt individuals under investigation or prosecution might be behind the protest.
They warned that these elements could exploit the situation to orchestrate a national uprising, potentially threatening the country’s peace and security.
While acknowledging the right to protest, the EFCC emphasized that it would not tolerate any disruption of law and order, especially around its offices nationwide.
The Commission is working with other security agencies to mitigate any potential threats.
The EFCC also urged parents, guardians, and heads of tertiary institutions to ensure their wards are not manipulated into participating in what could be a proxy war against the Commission by corrupt interests.
“The war being waged by the Commission against corruption and cybercrime is to protect the future of the youth of this country. That future is imperiled if Nigeria degenerates further in global reckoning as a den of fraudsters.”
