The Emir of Kano Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, has turbaned the District Head of Bichi, Alhaji Munir Sanusi Bayero, as the new Galadiman Kano.
The appointment followed the recent demise of the former occupant of the traditional title, Alhaji Abbas Sanusi.
The new Galadima is the son of the late Emir of Kano, Sir Muhammadu Sanusi I, and uncle of the current emir. He is the younger brother of the deceased Galadima Abbas Sanusi and son-in-law of a former Galadiman Kano, Alhaji Tijjani Hashim.
The emir also turbaned four other senior traditional councillors to hold various positions in the emirate. They included the Wamban Καnο, Alhaji Kabir Tijjani Hashim, who is the District Head of Nassarawa; the Turakin Καnο, Alhaji Mahmud Ado Bayero, the District Head of Gwale; the Tafidan Καnο, Alhaji Adam Lamido Sanusi, and Yariman Καnο, Alhaji Ahmad Abbas Sanusi.
Alhaji Kabir Tijjani Hashim was promoted from Turaki to Wambai, while Alhaji Mahmoud Bayero was elevated from Tafida to Turaki.
At the event that took place today at the Gidan Rumfa Palace, witnessed by thousands of onlookers, the five appointees were given staffs of their offices.
In his address on the event, the Emir, Sanusi, told the appointees: “You have been chosen based on your track records and those of your families. Most of you have shown and demonstrated loyalty to the emirate and our lineage, the people and the state in general.
“We are aware already of what you have been doing, you have been on the saddle to help the poor and are contributing immensely to the betterment of the society. I urge you all to keep it up and ensure that you borrow a leaf from your fathers. May God help you all in discharging your duties.”
He also said: “These titles are not merely symbolic but represent a call to service, dedication, and integrity. I urge you all to uphold the dignity of the institution, work with your local councils, and serve your communities with justice, fairness, and humility.”
The ceremony was witnessed by the state Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, members of the state executive council, traditional and religious leaders, as well as families and friends of the appointees.
Meanwhile, the deposed emir, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, also turbaned Alhaji Sanusi Ado Bayero as the new Galadiman Kano, thereby worsening the deep schism that has dogged the emirate ever since his deposition.
The turbaning took place at a separate ceremony held at his Nasarawa mini-palace.
Eyewitnesses said security operatives subsequently surrounded the official residence of the Galadima of Kano located in the Galadanci area of the city, early today.
The security cordon, thought to have been made to prevent the breakdown of law and order, sealed off the area and restricted access.
Neither the state government nor the Emir’s Palace issued a statement on the development.
