The Minister for Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, has addressed the widespread “misinformation” regarding the Federal Government’s policy on tertiary education.
During the 2024 Second Quarter Engagement with Heads of Department and Chief Executives of Parastatals at the Ministry’s Conference Hall, Prof. Mamman reassured stakeholders of the Government’s unwavering support for public universities and clarified the role of private sector involvement.
“Contrary to the false narratives circulating in the media, the Federal Government is not selling off universities to private investors,” Mamman asserted.
“Our administration values public institutions and is focused on reforms that will elevate Nigeria’s educational standard to a global level. We have introduced policies that encourage international investment and collaboration in our tertiary institutions, fostering global competitiveness.”
Mamman highlighted the success of similar initiatives in Asia, where international institutions have significantly raised educational standards and brought substantial economic benefits.
“By opening up our universities to international operators, we aim to replicate these successes and transform Nigeria into an educational hub.”
The Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tanko Yusuf Sununu, delivered a welcome address emphasizing the importance of a unified approach to tackling educational challenges.
He underscored President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s prioritization of education as a key instrument for poverty eradication and the need for graduates to be globally marketable and relevant.
Sununu highlighted the African Union’s focus on education for lifelong learning, urging open dialogue and respect for diverse opinions to achieve the President’s educational mandate.
“Regular consultations and collaborative efforts are essential in addressing the challenges we face and ensuring our educational system meets international standards,” he remarked.
