Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State

The Kaduna State Commissioner of Environment and Natural Resources, Alhaji Abubakar Buba, has said that Governor Uba Sani’s commitment to environmental sanitation and the general cleanliness of the state has started gaining national recognition, judging from the laurels he has been harvesting in recent times.

Buba, who made this known to newsmen on Thursday, disclosed that the governor was given the best performing Governor on ‘’Environment Health Award 2025’’ last Tuesday.

He disclosed that the award ceremony, which took place at the banquet hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, underscored the significance of the environment in enhancing health and general wellbeing.

He said that he represented the governor at the ceremony, adding that the award was given by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief George Akume, on behalf of President Bola Tinubu.

He commended both Governor Sani for ‘’expending enormous human and financial resources to keep Kaduna State clean, as well as residents for disposing their refuse in an manner that does not hurt the environment.”

According to the commissioner, the state government has engaged 2,400 street sweepers across the state to sweep major cities every day.

Justifying the government’s emphasis on environmental sanitation, Buba said: ‘’A clean environment is the foundation of a good healthcare system and a healthy citizenry and this translates to better productivity.

‘’The bacteria and vectors that cause common diseases like malaria, typhoid fever and cholera thrive in dirty environments. So, a clean environment is an antidote to most of our health challenges.’’

The commissioner said Tuesday’s award was the second recognition Kaduna received in recent times, recalling that Clean Up Nigeria had earlier ranked the state as the cleanest subnational in the Northwest.

He said that the recognition was contained in the   17th edition of Clean Up Nigeria’s State of Nigerian Environment (STONE), where Kaduna came tops in the Northwest, Akwa Ibom was adjudged the cleanest in the South-south, while Enugu led in the Southeast.

Buba recalled that the STONE report also ranked Lagos, Plateau and Borno as the cleanest in the Southwest, North-central and Northeast respectively.
