A leading opposition figure and governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State, Hon. Isa Ashiru, has called on Governor Nasiru El-Rufa’i to resign.
This followed the governor’s reported admittance that the state and the federal governments have failed in their duty to safeguard life and property, leading to the attack on the Abuja-Kaduna train by persons suspected to be bandits.
A statement issued by the organisation’s
Director of Public Affairs, Alhaji Yakubu Lere, said: “The Isa Ashiru Campaign organisation hereby commends Governor Nasiru El-Rufa’i for coming out boldly to admit that APC governments, both at the state, local and national levels have failed Nigerians.
The statement added: “We believe Governor El-Rufa’i took this decision after realising that they can’t blame PDP anymore or continue to decive people that all is well.
“Indeed, the governor’s statement is a rare, courageous action, but as a democrat the honourable thing to do is to immediately resign as governor and also advise President Buhari, who is the commander-in-chief, to also resign so as to allow INEC to conduct fresh election to enable people with the required competence and commitment to the plight of ordinary Nigerians in general and Kaduna State in particular become leaders and move the country and Kaduna State forward.”
Ashiru said El-Rufa’i’s “open admittance” of failure has “automatically disqualified them from fielding candidates in the 2023 general election.”
He added: “We call on the good people of Kaduna State in particular to take this open admittance seriously and vote all of them out in next general election.”
The campaign organisation offered its condolences to the federal and the state governments, as well as the families of those killed in the train attack and other attacks across the country.
It said: “May the souls of those killed rest in peace, the injured have speedy recovery and those kidnaped safe return to their families.”
It also reminded those in authority that “open admittance of failure and indeed other rhitorics are not acceptable.”
“What Nigerians need from them is decisive efforts to stop this babaric action by the terrorists.
“They should know that posterity will continue to judge them as a group of power mongers who came to power based on massive propaganda and deceit but at the end openly admitted that they have failed.”
