The Pan African Writers Association (PAWA) said it will encourage the enactment of strong legislation in member African countries on copyright regulations to curb the pervasive incidence of book piracy in the continent.

This assertion was made by the Secretary General of the writers’ body, Dr. Wale Okediran, when he visited the Director-General of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), Mr. John Ohi Asein, in his office in Abuja during the week.

While congratulating Asein on the recent passage of the reviewed Copyright Bill by the House of Representatives, Okediran said he believed similar laws across the continent would go a long way in the promotion of African literature.

He explained that PAWA was ready to partner with the NCC and other national copyright commissions in Africa in order to achieve this objective.

While thanking the president for the visit and commendation, Asein promised to collaborate with PAWA in the promotion of the book business in Africa.

During the visit, Okediran presented a copy of the book, ‘JJ Rawlings: Memories and Mementos’, which PAWA published, to the director-general.
