A national youth organisation, the Sir Ahmadu Bello Council of Nigeria, has honoured renowned Hausa actress Amal Umar with an award in recognition of her contributions to youth development and for serving as a role model to younger generations.
During a visit to the actress at her office on Sheikh Muhammad Nasiru Kabara Road in Kano this Saturday, leaders of the organisation presented her with the award and commended her for the role she has played in educating and inspiring young people.
Speaking during the visit, the organisation’s Executive Director, Muhammad Abdurrashid, said the council’s mission is to motivate young people to become productive members of society while combating idleness, drug abuse, and other social vices.
He said: “Our organisation educates young people about the dangers of drug abuse, thuggery, and other activities that hinder personal and societal development. We also encourage students and other youths to focus on their education and engage in activities that will benefit both themselves and society.”
He added that the organisation presents awards to young individuals who have distinguished themselves as positive examples within their communities.
“We do not usually present such awards to politicians. Instead, we focus on recognising outstanding young people who can serve as role models for others.
“Amal Umar began her acting career at a young age and has continued to demonstrate dedication and excellence, reaching the position she holds today. Throughout her time in the Kannywood industry, she has made significant contributions toward inspiring and encouraging young people to remain committed to their goals. That is why we considered it appropriate to honor her.”
Abdurrashid also expressed his appreciation for the warm reception the actress gave the delegation, noting that she demonstrated a willingness to continue supporting initiatives aimed at youth development.
In her remarks after receiving the award, Amal expressed her happiness and gratitude, saying the recognition showed that people are paying attention to the positive work she has been doing.
“I am truly delighted by this award. It shows that people have taken the time to assess my work and found me worthy of recognition. It is extremely encouraging when a respected organisation like this notices what you are doing and appreciates it.”
She said that in the past, she often felt that she was the only one who noticed her efforts, but the award reassured her that society also recognizes her contributions.
“This award has shown me that I am not the only one who sees what I am doing—other people see it as well. What surprised me most was that they came all the way to my office to present it to me. That makes it different from many other awards I have received at large public events.”
The actress also urged women, particularly those in the Kannywood film industry, to believe in themselves and overcome fear in pursuing their ambitions.
“I encourage women not to be afraid of pursuing their goals. When a woman decides to achieve something, she must first believe that she is capable of doing it. You can only discover your true potential by trying. Therefore, I urge them to remain determined and hardworking, because there is nothing they cannot achieve if they are committed and persistent.”
