An Economics teacher at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Ganiyat Adesina-Uthman, has called on the Federal Government to enact a law regulating child spacing.
Delivering the 19th inaugural lecture of the university in Abuja on Tuesday, the don enjoined government to enforce the law after it had been put in place.
Her lecture was entitled: “What Has Finance Got to do with It?’’
Adesina-Utman said there was the urgent need evolve an effective child spacing programme to address Nigeria’s current population growth rate.
She argued that the law would help to control indiscriminate child births and also help to reduce infant, child, and maternal mortality.
“Since rapid population growth rates have the likelihood of causing man’s demand on the environment to exceed its natural capacity, child spacing programme should be implemented.
“Finance drives growths and growths drive more financing. Linking the real sector with the financial sector is imperative, however.
“Migrating from financial capitalism to financial socialism, the basis of Islamic economics is also recommended for individuals, corporations and governments at all levels,’’ she said.
Adesina-Uthman stressed that the Islamic economic system had the capacity to address poverty, ensure equality and justice and could also be used to reduce the gap between the haves and the have-nots. (NAN)
